What's Brewing: January 29, 2016 Edition

We hope everyone survived the big snowstorm intact and had plenty of brew on tap to revive themselves after all the shoveling and snowblowing. Derek kept himself warm with a whiskey infused stout that was a big hit with the neighbors after it took a group effort to dig out the neighborhood.

Mary, on the other hand, was busy "quality checking" the new coffees the store is carrying from Commonwealth Joe. If her hands weren't wrapped so tightly around her coffee mug, she would be giving them a hearty two thumbs up. You can learn more about this amazing coffee company below.

Wake Up! There's A New Twist On An Old Pair
Coffee inspired beer is nothing new. I mean, why not mingle your two favorite beverages into a new, awesome hybrid. If you are in the mood to create a coffee flavored brew, make sure to read BYO's article "Brewing With Coffee: Techniques". It has plenty of tips and tricks as well as a recipe for Heine Brothers Coffee Stout.

Okay, now hold on to your coffee mug because we just heard about a cold-brew coffee trend that uses hops for extra flavor. I know - who would have thought?! But read this article from Daily Coffee News and see what you think. If you want to give it a go, here is the recipe we found. 

Hopped Cold-Brew Coffee Recipe
  • 3.5 ounces ground coffee
  • 0.25 ounce hops
  • 4 cups water
In a hop bag combine the ground coffee and hop pellets (Willamette or Citra). Add to water and age for 14 hours, remove hop bag and enjoy an icy glass of IPAish coffee.

This is a blend that keeps things simple, delivering traces of dark chocolate along with delectable sweet and salty flavors. This traditional Latin American coffee is clean and smooth, with hints of almonds, chocolate, and honeysuckle.  An Ethiopian coffee that is bright and complex, with hints of lemongrass and tangerine.  A velvety Sumatran coffee that is dark, creamy, and smooth, with hints of pine and dark chocolate.

Deep brown in color with a dark roasted coffee nose giving way to intense flavors of chocolate, coffee and a slight roasty note. Medium hop bitterness brings pleasurable balance to this dark ale, making it a brew to be enjoyed at any time of the day. A classic porter - rich and robust with a Java twist.
Cascade Vanilla Bean, Cocoa and EspressoCandi Syrup
This syrup is made from pure cane sugar, water, Madagascar Vanilla, Dutch Cocoa and cold brew coffee. Cascade recommends using the one pound jar of syrup just after high krausen while the yeast is still active. Add the syrup directly into 5 gallons of beer and stir/shake well.

Simpsons Coffee malt imparts intense coffee flavors, while leaving a smooth mouth-feel.  
162 - 226 degrees Lovibond.
