What's Brewing: January 29, 2016 Edition

We hope everyone survived the big snowstorm intact and had plenty of brew on tap to revive themselves after all the shoveling and snowblowing. Derek kept himself warm with a whiskey infused stout that was a big hit with the neighbors after it took a group effort to dig out the neighborhood.

Mary, on the other hand, was busy "quality checking" the new coffees the store is carrying from Commonwealth Joe. If her hands weren't wrapped so tightly around her coffee mug, she would be giving them a hearty two thumbs up. You can learn more about this amazing coffee company below.

Head down to the store to explore our latest additions to our local product lineup as well as our usual comprehensive selection of beer and wine making equipment and ingredients. Shop in store with our new convenient hours or shop 24/7 at our web store.

Wake Up! There's A New Twist On An Old Pair
Coffee inspired beer is nothing new. I mean, why not mingle your two favorite beverages into a new, awesome hybrid. If you are in the mood to create a coffee flavored brew, make sure to read BYO's article "Brewing With Coffee: Techniques". It has plenty of tips and tricks as well as a recipe for Heine Brothers Coffee Stout.

Okay, now hold on to your coffee mug because we just heard about a cold-brew coffee trend that uses hops for extra flavor. I know - who would have thought?! But read this article from Daily Coffee News and see what you think. If you want to give it a go, here is the recipe we found.

Hopped Cold-Brew Coffee Recipe
  • 3.5 ounces ground coffee
  • 0.25 ounce hops
  • 4 cups water
In a hop bag combine the ground coffee and hop pellets (Willamette or Citra). Add to water and age for 14 hours, remove hop bag and enjoy an icy glass of IPAish coffee.

Meet Commonwealth Joe
Four friends started Commonwealth Joe to help a local roaster bring her talent to the world, and to breathe new life into an ancient craft in the Virginia and D.C. region. Their shared goal: to make amazing coffee more approachable. The company has received acclaim for their single-origin coffee featuring varietals from around the world. Each coffee exhibits a carefully crafted flavor profile, inspired by the beauty, history, and character of places in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are big fans of this coffee here at myLHBS. Come in and grab a bag and see why people all over NOVA are tweeting #waytojoe.
